Tasty Homemade Taco Seasoning

I love taco salad as an easy low-carb, one-pan dinner during the week. As delicious as it is after reading the ingredients on the taco seasoning and seeing all the added salt (even in the low-sodium package) and chemicals, I decided to try a homemade version to cut out the crap. After playing with a few different popular taco seasoning recipes from pinterest, none of which quite hit the spot I finally came up with the best balance of ingredients the other day and had to write it down. I also find for people with sensitive digestive systems that the homemade recipe fares better than the store-bought. You can check out my undone taco recipe here.

Taco Seasoning

4 tbsp chili powder

3 tsp ground cumin

1 ½ tsp garlic powder

1 ½ tsp onion powder

1 tsp red pepper flakes or ¼ tsp cayenne pepper for medium spice (bump it up or down to your own heat preference)

1 tsp paprika

¼ tsp sea salt

2 tsp black pepper

1 tbsp cornstarch

 

Mix together all ingredients in a bowl. Sprinkle about 2.5 tablespoons for each pound of ground beef or to taste. Add 1/3 cup of water, mix and simmer for a few minutes to coat meat and thicken up a bit. Save extra taco seasoning in an airtight container.
